We are a nonprofit on a mission to promote community inclusion, independence and growth  for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, employment and cultural enrichment opportunities.

About Us


UMAR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an agency and ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Our 24 group homes, one independent living home, nine apartments and four day programs allow individuals to experience independent living in home-like atmospheres.

Today, UMAR serves over 400 individuals of all genders, races, ethnic origins, cultures and faiths in the following areas:

Founded in 1983 by the Western North Carolina Conference of United Methodist Church, UMAR is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, vocational and cultural enrichment opportunities.

UMAR will  pioneer diverse and lifelong supports for adults with developmental and associated disabilities throughout North Carolina.
