Residential Services
UMAR operates 21 group homes and 8 apartments all across the
Western half of North Carolina. Our homes are located in Asheville,
Charlotte, Concord, Cornelius, Gastonia, Greensboro, Hayesville,
High Point, Lincolnton, Statesville and Winston-Salem. Each home is
the residence for six individuals who receive 24-hr. supportive care
in an extended family setting.
In the homes, residents are engaged in person-centered programs,
social and recreational activities and they participate in events
and programs within the community. Group home residents gain
independence by learning and practicing everyday responsibilities
including cooking dinner, washing their own laundry and cleaning
their bedrooms.
Community Alternatives
Program (CAP)
Community Alternatives Program, or CAP, provides
community services to individuals of any age who qualify for care in
an intermediate care facility for the mentally retarded. The program
is devised to help individuals with developmental disabilities
become active members of the community. Through CAP, UMAR is able to
offer our residents on-site job coaching, supported employment
options and one-on-one supported living skills.
Developmental Therapies
According to the state of North Carolina,
Developmental Therapy is a developmental disability service that
includes the assessment, treatment and instruction of individuals in
the acquisition of activities of daily living skills that a
recipient has not gained at the normal developmental stages in
his/her life, or is not likely to develop without training or
therapy beyond age appropriate learning situations. UMAR’s Developmental Therapies include training in individual rights
and self-advocacy, positive social behaviors, health and hygiene
practices and household living skills. |
 Supported Employment
98% of UMAR residents are either employed or participate in day
programming specific to their abilities. Through job coaching and
on-site training, Supported Employment enables our residents to gain
the skills required for competitive employment within the community
in a job otherwise filled by a non-disabled individual. Our
residents work side-by-side with individuals who do not have
disabilities in a multitude of areas including landscaping,
assembly, food service, customer service and retail.
In addition, UMAR employs five residents on two grounds
maintenance crews and in administrative/janitorial positions in the
central office.
In-Home Services
UMAR can provide services to an individual that lives with a
parent/guardian or in his/her own home. UMAR is a provider of CAP
services and Developmental Therapy services, and for those with no
state or local funding sources, a private pay situation can be
worked out. Services to be provided to the individual include
community inclusion, self-help skills, socialization, leisure skills
and residential skills, to name a few. |
