On Saturday, June 5 volunteers came together to
support UMAR during Impact Day! Volunteers from the Lake Norman
District of the WNC-UMC, Mt. Zion and Wesley CDC worked together
to prepare the land for UMAR's Independent Living Project. |
These volunteers cleared the land and
began building a much-needed storage building. Thank you to all who

Charlotte Moose Lodge Hosts UMAR at Its Annual Christmas Party.
Many thanks to Cyndi Nash and the
Charlotte
Moose Lodge for inviting UMAR residents and staff to their annual
Christmas party!
On December 13, residents and staff from the UMAR Holt home celebrated
Christmas in style! The residents were gifted with stockings stuffed to
the brim and enjoyed a delicious, home-cooked barbeque lunch. To top it
off, the residents danced the day away, thanks to the live DJ.
But, according to the residents, the highlight of the day came from the
big man, himself. St. Nick made a very special visit to this party and all
the residents confirmed their presence on the nice list this year!

Annual Hall Group/UMAR Golf Classic! The tournament reached its goal and
raised over $60,000 for UMAR program participants. Congratulations to The

UMAR Earns 3-year Accreditation From CARF
UMAR has earned a 3-year Accreditation with three exemplary
ratings from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation
Facilities (CARF). CARF accreditation is a hallmark of quality
services, indicating that a service provider consistently meets or
exceeds national and international standards of quality and
excellence in its program and services. This is the highest
level of accreditation that can be awarded and exemplary ratings,
which identify programs of excellence, are rare for first-time
applicants.
UMAR received accreditation in Community Housing & Supported Living
for its group homes and apartments; Community Integration for its
ARTS program; and Community Employment Services for its job
development, training and supports. In addition to numerous
commendations, UMAR received exemplary ratings for its arts program,
low staff turnover and creation of a Resident In Need Fund.

UMAR ARTS Program student, Melissa Pappas was
recognized as a WBT Radio Hometown Hero in 2008. She is seen in
the middle of the photo with Stacey Simms and Al Gardener, hosts
of WBT Charlotte's Morning News. Melissa celebrated this honor
at the Hometown Hero Banquet on January 30, 2009 at the Palmer
Building in |
| Charlotte. Melissa is an aspiring
artist who expresses her creative talents through painting,
photography, drawing, jewelry design and pottery. Her art is
being viewed for its design and not for who created it. She is a
genuine example of how someone with an intellectual disability
can open doors, minds and hearts to the true human spirit
through her talent. Staff and students at the UMAR ARTS Center
as well as residents and staff at her UMAR Angel Home recognize
her enthusiasm to make a difference in the lives of friends,
family and the public. |
