Founded in 1983, UMAR’s mission is to promote community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, employment and cultural enrichment opportunities.

UMAR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an agency and ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Our 22 group homes and 8 apartments allow individuals to experience independent living in a home-like atmosphere.

What is a Developmental Disability?

Developmental Disability (DD) is a severe, chronic disability that is manifested before the age of 22 which significantly limits intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior.
